Dun Fhinn, Islay

Duns are a problematic class of monuments for Argyll. They encompass an ill-defined and diverse range structures, with limited evidence their chronology functions within late prehistoric early historic society, settlement economy. The Isle Islay has notably high concentration duns, especially in its south-east region. We describe small-scale excavation at one these, Dun Fhinn, designed to establish the date construction that circular internal structure, latter proposed by RCAHMS as later addition. These shown have functioned same time half 1st millennium bc, roundhouse likely being integral part original construction. Finds were few utilised stones, fragments burnt clay rim wooden bowl, while charcoal assemblage provides insights into surrounding landscape exploitation fuel. consider significance Fhinn development Iron Age Argyll.
